WHAT DO YOU MAKE/SELL? TELL US ABOUT YO’ SELF.
Becky Warren Design creates whimsical animal themed greeting cards, stationery and art prints all originally hand drawn with markers by me, Becky! Each card has a small piece of me drawn into it, and I love to see people’s reactions to them. I also do custom pet portraits (these are my favourite!).
HOW LONG HAVE YOU HAD YOUR BUSINESS?
This little handmade company was born in the beginning of 2014 in Calgary, Alberta, I was blown away by the outpour of support from my community, family and friends for my punny illustrations.
HOW DID YOU GET STARTED?
I’ve always drawn, I have years of sketchbooks of my silly animal drawings, but I never thought I could do much with that, so I pursued Graphic Design. After I graduated college I worked as a Graphic Designer for a few years out in Calgary, but I wanted more than the daily office grind. So I quit my day job, tested the waters as a freelance Graphic Designer, and stumbled upon the lovely community of Market Collective. I met so many great artists there and thought, I want to do that!
WHO OR WHAT INSPIRES YOUR WORK?
Animals inspire me. I love animals, I think they have the most interesting personalities and such human like characteristics at times.They make me laugh, and I try to bring that out in my drawings. I love to work on pet portraits for that reason, people love their pets, and I know that feeling. I have a Rottweiler named Raven (she makes frequent appearances on my Instagram) and she definitely inspires a lot of my work.
WHAT DO YOU DREAM FOR YOUR BUSINESS IN THE FUTURE?
My dream for my business has changed a lot since I started, and I’m sure it will continue to change as I grow as an entrepreneur and an artist. My goal for 2016 is to have my cards in more retail stores.
WHAT’S YOUR FAVOURITE SOCIAL MEDIA PLATFORM AND WHY?
Instagram! I don’t care for any other platforms because it is so hard to get any real feedback on any of them. Instagram is completely visual, and the community on there is so tight knit. It is the only social media platform where I have people come up to me and say “Hey! I follow you on Instagram!”. I’ve met so many great people through it.
HOW DO YOU PICK YOURSELF UP WHEN THINGS GO WRONG?
This one is tough. When things go wrong I really rely on my support system at home to remind me what I’m working towards, sometimes it’s really hard to see that light at the end of the tunnel. This business comes with lots of rewards, but it also comes with lots of self doubt. Things will go wrong, certain products just don’t sell, but that’s what pushes me to do better the next time.
WHATS ONE THING NO ONE KNOWS ABOUT YOU? GIVE US AN INTERESTING FACT!
I have a huge lightning shaped scar on my forehead (I hide it very well haha). I’m still waiting for my letter from Hogwarts.
IF YOU COULD HAVE ANY SUPER POWER WHAT WOULD IT BE?
Being able to fly. I could travel the whole world!
