Art can come in so many forms. Our next Meet Me Monday has the most beautiful ebb and flow in all of her work. Inspired by sometimes the simplest thing – such as cream clouding into coffee – Magda is the beautiful lady boss behind Modern Emulsions. Take a peek!

What do you make / sell? Tell us about yo’ self.
I am a self-taught contemporary abstract artist, who specializes in the blending effects between resin and acrylics. The work has fluid-like movement, and dries to a glassy finish. Abstract art resonates with me because it evokes the imagination. It allows the audience to perceive the piece as they need, and enables their minds to wander, to dream. (Art ranges from coasters and other homewares, to large wall art)
How long have you had your business?
Since July 2016! 😀
How did you get started?
In an effort to connect with my community, I began seeking out local cafes, markets, and events, and became enamored with the desire to be part of this local community of entrepreneurs. I left my corporate accounting job of 10 years recently to pursue the unknown. Despite painting infrequently throughout my life, it was the first time I felt an overwhelming push to let go of the analytics, and let self-expression through art dominate. That painting turned into two, then four, and with the amazing encouragement of friends and family, it became a legit business.

Who or what inspires your work?
Local creative entrepreneurs originally inspired me to pursue a non-corporate job (including my friend Kelly, from Little Blue Canoe). That need for freedom and living out my passion fuelled my drive. My art is inspired by daily beauty – whether it’s beautiful clouds, pouring milk into coffee, anything where colors blend or move. My first degree was in biochemistry, so I have a natural desire to experiment, see chemical reactions unfold, and enjoy the beauty of the process.
What do you dream for your business in the future?
At the root of my happiness, I want the ability to create pieces that can highlight a room, and spark passion and imagination in people. I know that people have busy lives (I was part of the corporate grind myself), so I’d love to share my art with people who connect with a piece, pause, and let themselves breathe. Let the art take you away – dream, meditate, whatever it is you need.

What’s your favourite social media platform and why?
Instagram! Art is visual, and IG really showcases this.
How do you pick yourself up when things go wrong?
Since this is a so new to me, everything is exciting. Sometimes overwhelming! Those are the times that I take 10 minutes to breathe. Then it’s a matter or organization, prioritization, and pumping up the hustle.
What’s one thing no one knows about you? Give us an interesting fact!
I love reading – I mean like, 100 books a year, type of reading! Epic fantasy series, post-apocalyptic survival novels, romances, paranormal, sci-fi, I LOVE THEM ALL!!

If you could have any super power what would it be?
Teleportation. Travel all day, and sleep in my own bed at night. Heavenly.
