Aja (pronounced like Asia) is just as sweet in person as her honey is. What first started as a love of bees and a project at SAIT has now taken hold of this girl bosses life. If you haven’t guessed it yet – Aja is the boss babe behind Drizzle Honey. Read more about her!
Aja – DRIZZLE HONEY

What do you make / sell? Tell us about yo’ self.
Boutique, sustainable honey products that are inspired by raw honey and local beekeepers. I also work with other small businesses on collaborations with Drizzle to come up with other honey-inspired products. I started with very humble beginnings as a hobby beekeeper and have grown the company to support other beekeeperS, launch a retail honey line and supply bulk honey to restaurants and cafes.
How long have you had your business?
About 1.5 years
How did you get started?
Before going full time with Drizzle my full time job was in the Applied Research & Innovation Services dept. at SAIT (a college in Calgary). I managed a research project in summer 2014 at SAIT which helped set up the rooftop beehives on campus for the culinary program. I totally fell in love with honey and the different flavours and colours that honey has from season to season and location. I also really wanted to help the Canadian honey industry by teaching Canadians the importance of eating honey from our country.

Who or what inspires your work?
Helping the environment and being of benefit to other people will always be the inspiration for my work! I always try to keep these two things at the heart of what I do.
What do you dream for your business in the future?
When people are asked what their favorite honey brand is, they often can’t name a brand or don’t know. I’d love for Drizzle to be a household name.
What’s your favourite social media platform and why?
Instagram! I love sharing my story through photos and have always loved how through photography people can get a sample of your life. It’s also such an easy way for retailers and customers to reach out to you, I love hearing from people!
How do you pick yourself up when things go wrong?
Deep breathing, meditation and a good nights sleep. If something goes wrong I always work to quickly correct it and then promise myself a break, workout or early bedtime. Everything looks different when you step away from it for a few minutes or sleep on it. It’s also important to remember that everything is impermanent, so just as much as things can go wrong they can quickly change to go right.
What’s one thing no one knows about you? Give us an interesting fact!
I once played drums in an all girl band even though I’d never played drums before. We only wrote one song and broke up after about a month.
If you could have any super power what would it be?
I can’t answer this question because no matter how hard I think about it I can’t come up with anything!!
