We are thrilled to introduce you to Masha and Gaurav, the two makers behind Lilacs N’ Wood. These two UofC engineering students put their brains together and have now created this wonderful card and wood “shop” here in Calgary. Take a look!
Masha & Gaurav – LILACS N`WOOD
What do you make / sell? Tell us about yo’ self.
My name is Masha and I’m a chemical engineering student at the UofC. I have lots of hobbies mostly all focused on art – nail designs, henna and of course, my greeting cards. Gaurav, is an electrical engineering student at the UofC and is very creative and loves to snowboard.
We hand make each card, which is why no two cards will ever be the same. By making a wood collection, we hope to refresh the greeting card stereotype by reusing natural Canadian materials.
How long have you had your business?
Less than a year
How did you get started?
We had the idea of starting this company completely out of the blue. We thought that greeting cards were getting too boring and that it’s so hard to find a nice, simple greeting card which doesn’t have silly drawings. That’s why we slowly started coming up with the company. Inspiration comes from people and their wants and their lifestyles and of course, the Canadian nature.
Who or what inspires your work?
Community is what inspires our cards. By seeing what people want and what they find appealing gives us ideas that we think the public will like. We can make anything customizable just to please our customers.
What do you dream for your business in the future?
We dream of re-introducing the classical idea of giving each other greeting cards or wood plates that are meaningful.
What’s your favourite social media platform and why?
We love instagram because through it we can show our followers and customers our products and keep them updated on the events that we will be at. Facebook is directly tied with our instagram page, so all the pictures get featured there as well.
How do you pick yourself up when things go wrong?
Meditation. We meditate every morning for 15-20 min which refreshes our brain and reenergizes our body. If the day gets too stressful, we do another meditation, also 15-20 min, depending of what we need – relaxation or energy.
What’s one thing no one knows about you? Give us an interesting fact!
I like to write my notes on blank paper because that way you are not constricted by lines or grids that you need to stay in. I colour code, but most of my writing is done in black ink.
If you could have any super power what would it be?
Stopping time. This way we would have all the time in the world to work on the nitty bitty details of our cards and wood plates, and we will get enough sleep.
