Bhan – Daugher Podcast
What do you make / sell? Tell us about yo’ self.
I make podcasts!
“Daughter” is a podcast series dedicated to sharing the untold stories of a child bride, refugee, and prison escapee. These stories also happen to belong to my mother. Throughout the series I find out about our extremely different upbringing and discuss the intersection of Canadian and South Sudanese identity.
How long have you had your business?
7 months!
How did you get started?

I got started early this year after realizing that the stories of women like my mother are stories that need to be heard. After putting a face to the issue of child marriage, my understanding of issues women face completely changed, so I figured that perhaps the details of her story might also make an impact on others.

I was inspired, so I spoke.

Who or what inspires your work?
First and foremost, my mother, for her amazing journey, her humaness, her womenhood, her bravery and courage. Following her (in no specific order): Malala Yousafzai, Beyonce, Viola Desmond, Lin Manuel Miranda, Roxane Gay, Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie and to be honest… all hard working women everywhere.
I am inspired by those who work hard despite the pressures they face on a daily basis. I am inspired by those who hope to create a better world for all people.
What do you dream for your business in the future?
I dream to inspire others with the stories of marginalized women like my mother. I dream to open up a dialogue that will promote equality, fairness, and love.
What’s your favourite social media platform and why?
I like instagram… though, I’m still trying to figure out my instagram game. I think photo’s are a really great way to engage a passive audience and turn them into active participants of the things going on with any given brand. It’s a great way to advertise and to create community. I also really like twitter, specifically on Bachelorette night and whenever Beyonce announces anything. It’s hilarious.
How do you pick yourself up when things go wrong?

I try to exercise. I find that the amount of time I put into one episode of my podcast series leaves me exhausted and at times I feel defeated. So i have to find some way to get my mind off of it before I get back to work. Usually exercise is really good because it helps me focus less on my work road blocks and more on the lactic acid build up in my thighs as I bike up my neighborhood hills… =)

In all seriousness though, I love being outside. Being in one of Calgary’s great parks/bike paths always lifts my spirits. I love to take breaks to listen to music or new podcasts.

What’s one thing no one knows about you? Give us an interesting fact!
I absolutely love Boy Meets World. It is my favorite family sitcom from the 90’s and I’ve been on the look out for all the seasons on dvd since 2012. I now have the first four seasons… So like… if you hear anything, let me know…
If you could have any super power what would it be?
Teleportation. Without a doubt. Because I have a very serious genetically induced problem with punctuality, and if i could just teleport, I think I might be a happier person. I think the people in my life might be happier people as well, as they wouldn’t be waiting on me to constant get my act together. They’d also have to spend less time recapping the first ten minutes of movies we go out to see. Everyone would win. I mean… I could also just be on time? I dunno.
